An analysis on students' error in using reported speech: A case study in the second year students of SMK YMJ Ciputat

The Objective of the research is to analyze how many errors happened in using Reported Speech by the students and to know the problem found with the students on using Reported Speech. The subjects of this study were the students of SMK YMJ, Ciputat at The Second Year. The method used in this study was qualitative research in a form of descriptive analysis that includes observing, collecting the students? test and analyzed, and interpreting the data about kinds of errors. In this study, the data are taken from observation, interview and test given by the researcher to the students SMK YMJ Ciputat By analyzing the student?s answer sheet, the writer obtained their scores of the test result and found that there were 27.74% students who made errors in the usage of Reported Statement, 50.33% students who made errors in using the Reported Request, and 21.93 % students who made errors in using the Reported Question. The writer also classified the types of errors made by the students. From 233 errors, 42 of them are addition. This type of errors contributed 18.02% to whole errors. The second place is selection of error which reached 180 errors. This type contributed 77.25% to whole errors. The last position placed by omission is the least frequent. Only 11 errors in this case. This type contributed 4.73%. The result of the research shows that the students made errors in using the Reported Speech because the usage of each Reported Speech (Reported Statement, Reported Request, and Reported Question) are different, so it made the students confused to use the Reported Speech correctly
