An analysis on students� errors in making elliptical construction, at SMAIT Al-Qur�aniyyah

The study aimed at knowing the most errors made by the second year students of SMAIT Al-Qur�aniyyah, Pondok Aren, Tangerang Selatan, and identifying the sources of the errors. The categories she used in classifying the errors are linguistic category, surface strategy taxonomy, and communicative effect taxonomy. To analyze those errors, she used descriptive analysis method. Firstly, she gave the students a completion test and asked them to make elliptical constructions. After that, she collected the data, identified the errors, and then classified the errors based on the three categories mentioned before. Lastly, she analyzed the sources of the errors. The result of the study showed that on the linguistic category, the auxiliary is the linguistic constituent which was affected the most by the students� errors with the percentage of 74.16%. It is followed by the adverb (19.15%) and the noun phrase (6.69%). On the surface strategy taxonomy, the most common type of error the students made is misformation error with the percentage of 63.47%. It is followed by omission error (29.1%), addition error (6.19%), and misordering error (1.24%) respectlively. Lastly, on the communicative effect taxonomy, most of the students� errors are classified as local errors with the percentage of 85.11%; meanwhile, the rest are classified as global errors (14.89%).
