the Correlation between students� self-confidence and their speaking skill (a correlational study in 8th grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Bogor)

Speaking is one of the goals of English teaching and learning in Indonesia, therefore, the government emphasizes the students to have speaking skill in order to achieve communicative competence. In fact, they have some problems in speaking English. Students� problem in speaking is not merely connected with their ability in learning English, but also the other factors. A reason tells that they are afraid to speak because they lack of self-confidence. Therefore, this research was aimed to see the relationship between students� self confidence and students� speaking skill in the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Bogor academic year 2013/2014. It involved 40 students of eighth grade as the subject of the research. The correlation of those two variables could be seen from the students� self-confidence score and students� speaking skill score. The writer used quantitative method and correlational design in this study as the research methodology. A purposive sampling was chosen as the technique of sampling because of several considerations. This research distributed the questionnaires, took students� speaking scores and did interviews to the respondents as the techniques of data collecting. The result of this research was got from the data analysis by using SPSS program and Pearson product moment to correlate two variables. Based on the statistical analysis of Self-confidence and English speaking skill showed that the value of coefficient correlation (r)= 0.482, it means there was a positive correlation which was showed by the result of robserve (0.482) > r table (0.3120 at 5% significance level)). Then t observe (2.69) > t table (2.02 at 5% significance level). Based on the result above, it could be concluded that there is a significant correlation between students� self-confidence and Students� speaking skill. It means, Ha was accepted and H0 was rejecte
