A comparative study between british and American English in pronunciation

This research is aimed at finding out the differences of sounds or pronunciations between British and American English. It is a qualitative research. The writer uses a comparative approach namely comparative historical linguistic. This is a method actually to compare the language families that is British and American English in pronunciation. The writer compares the differences between British and American English in pronunciation through two phenomenal dictionaries, Oxford and Webster�s dictionary. The writer classifies the data into two transcriptions, those are: vowels sounds and consonants sounds. Afterwards, he compares the collected data that is allophone or a characteristic feature of the sound. Further, the writer visualizes the sounds using phonetic transcriptions both British and American. The data analysis revealed some findings covering the formulated research question. It is found that a consonant sound that is very fundamental to distinguish British with American is r. Its sound in America is pronounced consistently before vowels as in words car \?k�r\ and desert \d? z?rt\. On the contrary, British have no r sound before vowels in other words British have r-less pronunciation is a characteristic feature of Received Pronunciation as in words car /k? ?(r)/ and desert /d? ?z? ?t/.
