Figures of speech and imagery in three poems by Robert Frost

The research discusses three poems by Robert Frost. Those are ?The Spring Pools?, ?Sand Dunes?, and ?Once by the Pacific?. The objectives of the research are to know what kinds of figures of speech and imagery in the poems and also to know the contribution of figures of speech and imagery in three analyzed poems. In this research the writer uses descriptive qualitative correlation approach that is analyzing figures of speech and imagery used by the poet to understand what their contribution to build the content of the poems. In this research, the researcher found that Robert Frost utilizes seven figures of speech: simile, personification, apostrophe, hyperbole, irony, allegory and allusion, and also four kinds of imagery: visual, tactile, organic, and auditory imagery. The writer concluded that Robert Frost used many kinds of figures of speech and imagery on the three poems. In ?The Spring Pools? they are hyperbole, simile, apostrophe, allegory, and irony of situation. Meanwhile the kinds of imagery found are visual, tactile, and organic imagery. In ?Sand Dunes? poem, figures of speech found are personification and apostrophe; kinds of imagery found are tactile, auditory, and organic imagery. The last poem is ?Once by the Pacific?. Here the writer detected allusion, personification, simile, and hyperbole in figures; visual and auditory in kinds of imagery.
