Teaching Reading Through Collaborative Learning: A Case Study at the Second Grade Junior High Scholl of Yayasan Pendidikan Umat Islam (YPUI) Jakarta

Reading is a form of communication, as information and ideas are exchanged between writer and reader in the act of communicating. Reading itself has various abilities that will involve some aspects of language, such as vocabulary, structure, spelling, pronunciation and meaning. Reading comprehension must be emphasized especially in vocabulary building which consist of spelling and its meaning. The writer finds it necessary to implement the collaborative learning method in teaching reading to find the effectiveness of the method in achieving the objectives of English teaching in junior high school. The writer limits her study in teaching reading material, stated in the English module used for Junior High School YPUI. Writer takes material teaching reading to be taught using collaborative learning. This study focused on the improvement achieved by student in reading subject. The research took place at SMP YPUI which is located at Jl. Praja Lapangan No.8 Kebayoran Lama, Jakarta Selatan. The writer began the research on 21st November 2011. To collect the data, the writer gives reading text in form of pre-test and post test for the second grade students of SMP YPUI. Both of the data collected in this study are in form of qualitative data. The data will be given in percentage of certain range of score the students achieve in the test. The range of score between 0-3 is BAD, the range between 4-6 is ENOUGH, and between 7- 10 is GOOD. The technique of data analysis that the writer uses is descriptive analysis technique (Percentage)
