The effectiveness of teaching degrees of comparison through pictures: an experimental study at the second grade student of SMP Al-Hasra

Dealing with teaching and learning English, a number of problems emerge when students learn English especially grammar. They think that grammar consists of some confusing rules. Hence, in this skripsi, the writer applies pictures to teach one of the grammar rules, degrees of comparison. The objective of the study is to find the empirical evidence whether there is any significant difference between students� achievement in learning the degrees of comparison through pictures or not. The writer uses an experimental study to do the research. She compares two classes of second grade students of SMP AL-HASRA. The first class, as the experiment class, is taught the degrees of comparison through pictures. The second class, as the control class, is taught through Grammar Translation Method (GTM). The writer gave the pre-test, implemented the treatment, and gave the post-test to obtain the data. Based on the result of the research, for the experiment class, Mpre-test is 54, Mpost-test is 73.93, and Mgained score is 19.93; while for the control class, Mpre-test is 52.4, Mpost-test is 71.13, and Mgained score is 18.73. Besides, t-observation (to = 3.33) is higher than t-table (tt5% = 2.05 and tt1% = 2.76). It means that there is a significant difference between students� achievement in learning the degrees of comparison through pictures and Grammar Translation Method (GTM). Thus, using pictures can improve second grade students� achievement of SMP AL-HASRA in learning the degrees of comparison
