Mammary neoplasias represent approximately half of the tumors observed in dogs, among them, 50% are malignant. Most part of tumors affects females between 8 and 10 years old, however, tumors in animals under 5 years old can occur, without breed preference. The animals affected by tumors are intact females or females that underwent a late ovariohysterectomy, being rare in males and young animals of both sexes. When ovariohysterectomy is done before 2 years and half of age it has a protector effect against the risk of developing mammary tumors. The influence of progesterone administration on mammary tumors development is related to the prolonged treatment and high doses.
