This study is dedicated to show the importance of implementation of Law 10.639/03, which ruled that educational institutions in Brazil start to implement the study of history and Afro- Brazilian and African culture in the school curriculum. This research is based on qualitative nature with emphasis on bibliographic analysis and existing publications that deal with the said topic. In January 2003, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva signed Law No. 10,639 / 03 which made compulsory the teaching of African and African-Brazilian history and culture in the establishments of basic education in Brazil.
