Electron spin resonance (ESR) and magnetic susceptibility studies have been performed on polycrystalline samples of the quasi one-dimensional cuprate (Ca0.80Y0.20)0.82CuO2 for which the formal Cu valence is +2.20. The magnetic behavior of the compound is accurately described by a contribution from alternating Heisenberg chains (ACH), and a Curie-Weiss (CW) component, which appears undetected in our ESR experiments. The latter contribution may be derived from spin fragments introduced by the doped hole carriers which behave in isolation from the ACH chains.
