Scientific researchers have often been the early adopters and co-creators of new technology. Through programmes like e-Science and cyberinfrastructure, the last decade has seen many emerging technologies harnessed for application in a range of research disciplines. Here we discuss some of the technologies that have been promoted, including Grid, Semantic Web and Web 2.0, informed by experience of a diverse range of examples. Our aim is to achieve insights into the e-Research ecosystem to guide our future journey. © 2010 IEEE
