Four negative ion peaks are observed as a function of energy for the dissociative attachment of electrons in the gases C2H2 and C2D2 by means of a total ionization chamber. The first peak is due to C2H- (C2D-) ions, the second to the H- (D-), C-2 and C2H -(C2D-) ions and the two last peaks are of the type C-2. We have measured the absolute cross sections and determined the ionization efficiency curves ; the onset of the ionization curve for C2H- is 2.3 ± 0.1 eV ; this curve exhibits the shape characteristic of a vertical onset process and the cross section at the maximum is (2.2 ± 0.3) × 10-20 cm2.
