In the field of superconducting devices devoted to microwave applications, the crystalline texture of high quality thin films based on YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7 - \delta}$ is of primary importance. This study presents the formation of this texture on MgO substrates with the nucleation and growth steps up to a film thickness of 300 nm as observed by means of AFM, HRTEM and XRD. The influence of deposition temperature on the growth mode is shown and a nucleation/growth model is discussed.
