The light absorbed by an atomic vapour in a transverse optical pumping experiment exhibits resonant variations when the static magnetic field is swept around the zero field value corresponding to the crossing of the ground state Zeeman sublevels (Hanle effect). Resonances of the same kind also appear when the transverse pumping is done in an amplitude modulated magnetic field (parametric resonances). These resonances are extremely narrow when observed on alkali vapors and therefore they are of great interest for the detection and measurement of very weak magnetic fields.
