The time correlation function ψ(τ) = x(t) x(t + τ) of a real fluctuating quantity x(t) is an even function of τ. If x(.) is recorded on a magnetic tape, its examination does not allow to distinguish between the two senses of reading the tape. On the contrary, other correlation functions, as x(t) (x( t + τ) - x(t + 2τ) x(t + 3τ) are sensitive to this sense. Thus we introduce the idea of a correlation function testing the time-symmetry of x(.). We show on various examples in noise theory the interest of this notion.
