Experimental results obtained in various gases, especially H2 and CO2 with a proportional counter, show that free electrons appear at the focal spot for laser powers much below the threshold for optical gas breakdown. The variations of the appearance threshold of these electrons are not in line with the assumption of a highly non-linear (multiphoton) effect. An effect of order 1 ou 2 seams to agree with the experimental results, for high pressures.
