The most important methods of silicon purification involve physico-chemical techniques of separation. They yield an ultrapure metal but its cost price is not compatible with photovoltaic application. The zone melting process used, consists in the displacement of a melted zone metal under an argon hydrogen plasma. The melted zone is then characterized by a vertical gradient of concentration and temperature which drains impurities towards the upper surface of the bar. Moreover the displacement of the zone between the head and the tail of the bar ensures a horizontal drainage of impurities towards the latter end.
