A gliding arc device allows the production of powerful nonequilibrium plasmas at atmospheric pressure that are interesting for industrial applications. This device takes advantage of an arc which slides between two divergent electrodes in a gas flow. The paper presents a physical model of this arc with the aim of studying the plasma parameters, and two working conditions are distinguished. During a first period the arc in thermodynamic equilibrium slides between the electrodes with a dissipated power per unit length that remains fairly constant ; when the length of the arc attains a certain critical value the dissipated power is no longer sufficient to balance the heat losses.
