A low-temperature theory of the IC-transition between an incommensurate floating ordered and a commensurate registered ordered phase in d ≽ 2 dimensions is described, with an emphasis on results for the sine-Gordon system with a twist field δ coupling to the gradient of the phase variable ϕ. Three types of fluctuations were found to be important in this treatment : (i) The optical phasons determine essentially the shape of the IC-transition line. (ii) The existence of acoustic phasons characterizes the floating ordered phase. They destroy the long-range translational order in two dimensions.
