The theory of interatomic collisions, in the sudden approximation, is generalised in order to calculate their influence on the evolution of the density matrix of atomic excited states of a vapour. One takes in account the dipolar electrostatic interaction only and its first (resonant) and second order (non resonant) terms. To average the effects of one collision, a development of the density matrix in standard components of irreductible tensor operators is used in a systematic way ; this simplifies the definition and the calculation of cross-sections and relaxation times corresponding to different observables.
