Nous montrons que les interactions statiques et dynamiques d'un système colloïdal, formé de sphères de silice stériquement stabilisées en suspension dans un solvant organique, peuvent être décrites par un modèle de sphères dures, et ce jusqu'à des fractions volumiques importantes. Pour des fractions volumiques supérieures à 0,5, on peut assister à une transition vers un système ordonné. Pour des particules de dimension supérieure à 200 nm, cet ordre se traduit par une iridescence, due aux réflexions de Bragg en lumière visible. Nous présentons dans cet article ces nouveaux cristaux colloïdaux et discutons quelques résultats expérimentaux de diffusion de la lumière.
