Resonant collision cross sections are studied for J = 1 → J = 0 transitions when the collisional excitation transfer between the atoms is not quite resonant. The relaxation and transfer rates decrease rapidly as the energy defect increases, and the emitter line is displaced by values which can be of the same order of magnitude as the line broadening due to the dipole-dipole interaction. The comparison of the numerical results with those obtained by Omont using the second order semi classical Born approximation and a cut-off method, reveals the failure of such methods to describe the collisional transfer as soon as it becomes non-resonant. The validity of the use of such an approximation to account for the rotational transfer during molecul...
