We report measurements of the critical attenuation of longitudinal ultrasonic propagation in the vicinity of the phase transition of ferroelastic G. M. O. No critical attenuation was observed for propagation along the [001] axis, but it varied as (T — T0)-1.50±0.02 for propagation along the [100] axis in the ferroelastic phase. An expression for the ultrasonic attenuation is given in terms of an anharmonic coupling between the strain and the overdamped soft mode.
