The X-ray intensity scattered in Bragg reflections which appears in the beginning of décomposition up to 350 °C of iron-saturated wustite, is caused by precipitation of a metastable phase. This phase is oxygen rich but its structure is different from that of magnetite. It is related to the superstructure which is found in quenched oxygen-rich wustite. This latter includes in fact some vacancies. The superstructure reflections are due to the ordening of these vacancies in the NaCl type lattice.
