Precise measurements of odd-even Relative Isotope Shifts (of the order of 10-3), make it possible to determine directly the second order hyperfine interaction of the 3D3 and 1D 3 levels and the electronic factors a6s of the 6 snd configurations of mercury. For n = 6, the value a6s(6snd) = 1335.5 ± 2 mk determined in this way, is in good agreement with the value (1334.9 +1.4 mk) given by the analysis of the hyperfine structure alone. For n = 7, a6s(6s 7d) = 1 347 ± 2 mk ; this latter value is close to the limit value of a 6s deduced previously from the (d10 6s) 2S 1/2 term of Hg II. Consequently, it is possible to interpret the observed anomalies in terms of second order interactions, and it is not necessary, in the case of mercury, to look...
