This article is concerned with the construction and perfectionment of a very high resolution confocal Fabry-Perot spectrometer followed by a system for synchronisation and accumulation of the signals. The Fabry-Perot, with a free spectral range of 214 MHz can be used either in the single or double-pass arrangement, the latter giving a high finesse and an extremely high contrast. An original system permits this high resolution to be maintained over long periods of time, thus giving also a high ultimate sensitivity. This apparatus has enabled us to measure with precision the widths of the lines due to scattering from entropy fluctuations in benzene, from orientation fluctuations in pyvalic acid (a plastic crystal) and also the Brillouin shift...
