The magnetic resonance of the metastable 6 3P0 atoms of 199Hg optically pumped in a vapour has been observed. This level is populated by means of collisions between 199Hg atoms in the 6 3P1 state and nitrogen molecules. The relaxation time of these metastable atoms orientation, derived from the width of the resonance curve, is given as a function of nitrogen pressure and of mercury atoms density.
