By stepwise excitation with very bright light sources, cadmium atoms are excited in the 63S1 level. The lifetime of this 6 3S1 level has been determined by Hanle effect measurements (zero field level crossing). Coherence transfers from the 53 P1 level to the 63S1 level have been observed in the visible fluorescence from the 63S1 level, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The cross-sections for depolarization of cadmium atoms in the 63S1 level by collisions with rare gas atoms are zero within expérimental errors.
