The use of a superimposed beam geometry strongly increases the interaction time between a laser wave and an accelerated ionic beam, without loosing the well known advantages of fast ion beams (Doppler tuning, time resolution, absence of collisions). As an example of the possibilities of this technique we have experimentally obtained the optical pumping of odd stable isotopes of Ba+, that we have studied in flight with two independant détection channels. Saturation effects observed with a resonant excitation by a single mode-laser are explained using a three level system.
