Polymorphisme smectique du parabenzylidène-di-n, butyl-4-aniline (TBBA)

The molar volume of TBBA has been studied as a function of temperature using a dilatometer. The polymorphic transitions between the crystal, the smectic B and the smectic C phases can easily be detected by the sudden increase of the volume. For the second order transition between the smectic C and the smectic A phases, only a change of the thermal expansion coefficient is observed. The existence of metastable smectic phases has been confirmed. The thickness of the smectic layers has been measured as a function of temperature by low-angle X-ray diffractometry. The combination of these two sets of experimental data makes it possible to calculate directly the molecular area, that is the area occupied by each molecule in the plane of the layers. The analysis of the thermal evolution of this parameter leads to a new method of calculating the tilt angle of the molecules within the layers. The values that have been found are in good agreement with those previously reported in the literature. The critical exponent β in the power law relating the tilt angle to the temperature has been calculated by a least-square fit of the experimental data ; it was found to be equal to 0.51 ± 0.03.L'évolution thermique du volume molaire du TBBA a été déterminée par dilatométrie. Les transitions polymorphiques entre le cristal, la phase smectique B et la phase smectique C sont caractérisées par une augmentation brutale du volume. Pour la transition entre la phase smectique C et la phase smectique A, qui est une transition de second ordre, on note seulement un changement dans la valeur du coefficient thermique d'expansion. L'existence de phases smectiques métastables est confirmée. L'épaisseur des couches sméctiques en fonction de la température a été mesurée à l'aide de la diffraction des rayons X aux petits angles de Bragg. La combinaison de ces deux séries de résultats expérimentaux nous a permis de calculer l'aire moléculaire, qui est la surface occupée par chaque molécule dans le plan des couches. L'analyse de l'évolution thermique de ce paramètre conduit à une nouvelle méthode de calcul de l'angle d'inclinaison des molécules. Les valeurs que nous avons trouvées sont en bon accord avec celles déjà citées dans la littérature. L'exposant critique β dans la loi de puissance reliant l'angle d'inclinaison à la température a été calculé. On trouve β = 0,51 ± 0,03
