The structure of the defects which comprise the latent track of heavy ions in muscovite mica is studied, using small angle scattering of X-rays. The scattered intensity versus angle is analysed by means of Guinier or Porod's plots. It is concluded that the defects, which are spherical, are inhomogeneous. The hypothesis of a Gaussian shape for the electronic density profile of the defects fits the results well. During annealing the external part of the defects disappear at low temperature (300 °C), the centre of the defects is suppressed at higher temperatures.
