The (ν3 + ν4) combination band of 12 CH4 is analysed with the aid of a tensorial Hamiltonian due to J. Moret-Bailly, but using a new coupling scheme for angular momenta, such that R = (P - I4) - I3. Exploiting the properties of symmetrized 3-j symbols, and making use of ground-state combination-differences obtained from new spectra recorded under high resolution, allowed the assignment of 667 lines for J ≤ 7, from 4157 to 4 425 cm-1 to be made ; 454 of these are used for the determination of 22 molecular constants, giving a fit with a standard deviation σ = 0.031 1 cm-1.
