With a spectrophotometer using the single photoelectron technique, the fluorescence spectra of noble gases excited by the α-particles of 210Po are determined ; the gas pressure being varied in the range between 6 atmospheres and a few hundred millimetres of mercury. In the cases of helium and neon, a characteristic emission of the nitrogen molecule or ion is mainly observed. This is due to an important energy transfer to the nitrogen although the content of this gas is negligible. This effect is smaller in the case of argon, where, in addition, the origin of the emission spectrum is not well known. Finally, in the cases of krypton and xenon, we observe a continuous spectral distribution arising from the de-excitation of diatomic molecules o...
