A description is given of the main color centres in ionic crystals : F-type centres, which involve trapped electrons ; V-type centres, where positive holes have been trapped ; and finally impurity centres (hydrogen, divalent metal, oxygen). A brief summary of the experimental methods used in the study of color centres precedes the description of the centres.
