The recently discovered twist grain boundary (TGB) phases, intermediate between the cholesteric and the smectic phases, have surprising physical properties. Both typical textures of the cholesterics and columnar structures can be observed in the same TGBA sample, while on the other hand, TGBC samples exhibit a commensurate behavior. Here, we analyse these paradoxical properties in terms of the mechanical rigidity associated with the rotation angle of the smectic slabs. We deduce a simple classification in which the TGBA phases essentially build up columnar textures with developable domains but are incommensurate, and in which conversely the TGBC phases make focal conics and show a commensurate behavior of integer order, with perhaps intermi...
