We have measured the cross-section and the polarization of 155 MeV protons scattered by 208Pb. An optical model analysis is performed on the elastic scattering results, and the parameters are compared with previous values for 209Bi. The results for the first excited state (3- at 2.62 MeV) are interpreted in the distorted waves impulse approximation (D.W.I.A.), using Gillet's wave function. The collective character of this level seems not to be sufficiently taken into account by the model.
