We describe an experiment for measurements of the paramagnetic susceptibility of single crystals ; the magnetic field is applied along different orientations with regard to the cristallographic axes. We present the experimental results for some rare earth elements of the second sequence. We discuss the effect of the shape of the sample on the definition of the intrinsic magnetic quantities of the substance. Paramagnetism is completely defined when we know the properties of both principal susceptibilities : χint∥c parallel to the c axis, and χint〉c , in a direction in the basal plane.
