Les effets à N corps dans les métaux dus au changement du nombre d'électrons occupant les niveaux de coeur se manifestent dans de nombreux cas en spectroscopie UVL. On avait pris conscience et discuté depuis longtemps de l'importance possible du trou de cœur. La notion d'excitons dans les métaux proposée par Mahan avait fortement stimulé ce sujet, et fut tout d'abord appliquée au cas des singularités de seuil dans les métaux simples. Ce problème, discuté en détail dans une mise au point de Mahan en 1974, fut alors déclaré intégralement résolu. Cette affirmation fut fortement remise en question par Dow et ses collaborateurs.
