A phenomonological view is presented that links acoustic momentum, radiation pressure and streaming. The technique of measurements of radiation pressure is discussed in the light of this view. Thus the steady force on a paddle in a plane wave sound field is shown to be strongly dependent on the configuration of the medium outside the sound field. An apparatus is described which gives the sound absorption coefficient from measurement of small differences in the static pressure. The principle of operation of this apparatus is essentially new and is based on a gradient of static pressure which is associated with an opposite gradient of radiation pressure.
