The 4A2 4A2 → 4T 2 4A2 0-phonon transitions of third neighbour pairs and fourth neighbour pairs have been observed in the excitation spectra of these pairs at low-temperature for strongly doped ruby crystals. This experimental result makes evident the intrinsic pumping of pairs. Modulation of the excitation was used in order to be able to separate the transfer excitation spectra from the direct excitation spectra of the ion pairs. An equivalent electric circuit gives a correct scheme for the excitation and emission. The time constants of the emission are determined by measurement of phase shifts.
