Pressure broadened absorption profiles of the mercury 1 849 Å line have been determined with nobles gases as perturbers. A broad spectral range has been scanned : 10 to 8 000 cm-1 from line centre in the red wing, 10 to 1 500 cm-1 in the blue one. The absorption profile of Hg-Xe mixture is studied in detail because it exhibits the most characteristic features (red and blue satellites). In the red and blue wings, the observed temperature dependence of the absorption profile, interpreted in the quasistatic approximation, leads to information on interaction potentials for Hg-Xe pairs both in the ground state, Hg(6 1S0)-Xe(5 1S0), and the excited states, Hg(6 1P1 m = 0)-Xe(5 1S0), Hg(6 1P1 m = ± 1)-Xe(5 1S0), in the range 3.2-5 Å.
