The energy band theory in a solid has been approached by group theory. From cristallographic considerations, the space group of a crystal is defined. It can be identified to the group of the Schrödinger equation of quantum mechanics. The theory of the representations of a group enables one to introduce the Bloch functions, the reciprocal lattice and the first Brillouin zone, the symmetry points and axes of which give the frame of the energy diagram. The latter is discussed according to the selection rules which determine all the allowed optical transitions. Most of these are given for Gd which belongs to the heavy Rare Earth series, which we have optically studied in thin films. An optical absorption peak is found. It does not show, however...
