A discussion of the application of the atom probe technique to the characterization of the solute segregation to interfaces is presented. Methods based on simple geometrical models for all boundary orientations in the field ion specimen and on the Gibbsian interfacial excess are presented. Atom probe results for phosphorus segregation in two Russian pressure vessel steels were found to be in good agreement with the predictions based on McLean's model of grain boundary segregation
