Dealing with number fluctuations (NF) ΔN(K, t), as a complex stochastic process, a discussion is given of the problem of higher-order time-dependent correlation functions of NF. The functions convey information on the statistics of the stochastic process and show the Δ N(K, t) process to be, in general, non-Gaussian. Each of the correlation functions can be expressed by two components, the one related with free (non-interacting) atoms and the other with atoms correlated in space and time. The time-dependent correlation functions calculated in this paper are shown to be in agreement with the properties of the same functions, calculated for the case of the thermodynamical limit.
