We have performed Rayleigh-Brillouin experiments to get information on the relaxation of the internal energy in some polyatomic gases (O2, N2, CH4, CO2 and SF6). We have compared our experimental results with the theory of translational hydrodynamics of Desai, Kapral and Weinberg. The theory has been generalized to a series of two relaxation processes. Non-ideal gas corrections have been very carefully performed. We obtain a very good agreement between theory and experiment in the wide pressure range we have studied. This enables us to describe theoretically how the linewidths vary during the relaxation processes.
