Le mélange des ondes optiques dans les vapeurs a été utilisé pour produire des rayonnements cohérents, intenses et de faible largeur de raie dans le VUV. Les vapeurs atomiques et moléculaires ont permis de créer des longueurs d'onde aussi courtes que 38 nm et accordables d'une façon continue dans la région entre 130-200 nm. Une revue des différentes méthodes non linéaires de rayonnement VUV sera présentée.
