Formadas por um núcleo sílica pura e uma casca micro-estruturada (sílica e ar), estas fibras permitem o confinamento óptico e acústico em regiões da ordem do comprimento de onda. Como resultado, a interação acústo-óptica apresenta características radicalmente diferentes daquelas observadas em meio bulk ou em fibras convencionais.
