Effect of Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management (CBSM) to Stress and Anxiety Level in Advanced Stadium of Cervical Cancer Patients in Merak Room RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya

Introduction: Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancer suffered by woman (Cunningham, 2005). Women who are diagnosed cancer and go through a long period of treatment will have experience of stress and anxiety. Known, cognitive behavioral stress management can reduce the level of stress and anxiety. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) to stress and anxiety level in advanced stadium of cervical cancer patients in Merak room RSUD dr. Soetomo Surabaya. Method: Quasy experimental design was used in this study. The population was cervical cancer women. Total sample was 36 respondents; consist of 18 treatment respondents and 18 control respondents, taken according to inclusion criteria. The independent variable was the CBSM. The dependent variable was level of stress and anxiety. Data were collected using respondents questionnaire. Data were then analyzed using paired T-test with level of significance of < 0.05. Result: Result showed that there was effect of CBSM to stress and anxiety level in pre and post test in treatment group (p = 0.000), while in control group there was no effect to stress and anxiety level in pre and post test (p=0,132). In pre test between two groups, there was difference of stress and anxiety level between treatment group and control group (p=0,000). In post test, there was effect of CBSM to stress and anxiety level in treatment group rather than in control group (p=0,001). In chi square test, the results were p=0,001 and risk ratio=4,6. It meaned that respondents giving CBSM had decreasing of stress and anxiety level 4,6 times much more than respondents did not get the intervention. Discussion: It can be concluded that cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) can influence the decreasing of stress and anxiety level. Further studies should involve better measurement in time and more respondents to obtain more accurate results
