From a long time, grain models were — and still they are — performing tools for studying the mineral and material world. Although their possibilities are in fact bounded, they are commonly used by observers of minerals and rocks. Specially important is the stereology of grain shapes, because shape generally has some genetic meanings. The effective modelling of rocks, even the simplest of them (i.e. monophased polycrystals) depends on the general results and progress in the geometry of polyhedra. Recent advances in this field are mentionned in this paper.
