As an unambigous criterion for determining the deterioration of a G. M. couter tube, the value ΔVI/ΔVH, the change in pulse-hight as a function of the applied high-voltage, has been defined. A study was made of the relative importance of the three main constituents of a G. M. counter on its characteristics. Asystematic study was made of the influence of anode, cathode and of the gas-phase composition. It is shown that the bad functioning of an aged counter can be ascribed to two different factors : changes of the gas phase, that influence mainly the plateau characteristics and changes on the anode surface that cause a gradual decrease of the value Δ VI/ΔVH.
